Ancient Egyptians revered the Blue Lotus plant. King Tutankhamun’s mummy was found adorned in this flower, and hieroglyphics on tomb walls and ancient papyrus scrolls detail how the Egyptians fermented blue lotus in clay vessels; with other plants, fungi and fruits, to extract and activate its powerful alkaloids. The wine was consumed in ceremony to facilitated altered states of consciousness and communication with the Gods, and reserved only for the Pharaohs and royal, elite members of the society.

Australian Aboriginal people have used its medicine for as long as 4000 years, and it can also be found in Greek, Mayan and Tibetan culture dating back as far as the Alexandrian Empire (14th century BCE) It has been said to enhance intuition, heal ancestral wounds, and facilitate lucid dreaming. Blue Lotus is an endangered plant species, as it requires very specific conditions to grow. Pollution and climate change have caused its extinction in its native origins — the Nile. However it is still grown in Thailand and on farms.
